Child Drum Kits

January 29th, 2011

All children love to make noise. Even toddlers will find items they can bang on to create sound for themselves. Generally the first set of drums a child ever has is a spoon and a metal pot. Well times have changed and there are actually many manufacturers that have created drum sets for the very young. The prices of these sets can be expensive so make sure your child is interested in learning how to play before investing in a kid’s drum kit.

Many of these sets come as easy to assemble kits that can grow with your child. That’s an important point to consider because children grow and develop so quickly you wouldn’t want to keep replacing the instrument that costs upwards of $100 every year. Another good point to consider is location. A growing drum kit can take up a lot of space not to mention the sound of the drumming itself. You may want to locate the set in an area that has a door that can close such as the child’s bedroom. Closing the door while the child practices, reduces the amount of drumming noise heard by the rest of the household.

If the child is a beginner you should start with a simple three piece set. The set includes a bass drum, a snare drum and a tom drum. The tom drum is usually mounted on a stand. The tom drum will need to be attached to the stand it will be on. It helps to find a set that has adjustable stands so they will be able to expand as your child grows. In a five piece set there will be two tom drums that need to be mounted on stands. In addition there will be cymbals that also need to be attached to the stands they will be on.

The drum sets are usually designed to grow with your child’s ability so a three piece beginner set can usually grow to a five piece kid’s drum kit. The sets will also come with a stool that may require a minimal amount of assembly. You will also want to look at the various types of sticks and brushes available for your child to use in playing the drums. There may also be a drum pedal for the bass drum which may have to be attached. Most companies that manufacture children’s drum sets also carry the required replacement parts should you ever need to fix a part of it.

If you’re not sure you want your child to pursue an active involvement with the drums then you may want to look into other child sized musical instruments. You can find pianos, guitars, violins and even harps designed for children to learn on. Making an investment in expanding the musical horizons of your child will more than repay itself as you listen to their first recital.
